Contractor FAQ

Everything you need to know about working with HWHS.

How does HWHS pricing work?
HWHS sets all prices for services. For HVAC, pricing is determined by our team using market data and industry expertise. For non-HVAC trades, contractors set their own rates initially and HWHS takes a 15% platform fee. Over time, as we build market knowledge in each trade, we migrate to full HWHS-set pricing across all categories. You see the payout amount before accepting any job.
Can I negotiate prices with homeowners?
No. This is a core principle of the platform. You never discuss money with the homeowner. The price is set before the job is booked, the homeowner prepays in full, and you receive your payout after completion. This protects both you and the homeowner from awkward negotiations.
How and when do I get paid?
Payouts are processed via Stripe Connect. When the homeowner confirms the job is complete, your payout is released within 24 hours. Funds go directly to your bank account through Stripe. No invoicing, no 30-day terms, no chasing payments.
What if I find bigger work on-site?
You report the finding in your job notes and complete the original job you were booked for. HWHS then contacts the homeowner with the finding, explains the options and pricing, and books a new job through the platform if the homeowner wants to proceed. You never pitch or upsell the homeowner directly.
Can I decline a job?
Yes. You can accept or decline any job with no penalty. If the job doesn't fit your schedule, location, or expertise, pass on it and we'll route it to another contractor.
Is there a subscription fee?
Yes, there's a monthly contractor subscription fee to be on the platform. This keeps the network serious — only contractors who are committed to doing work through HWHS. The fee is straightforward and disclosed during onboarding.
Do I need a license?
For Tier 1 licensed trades (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Roofing, Insulation), yes — you need the appropriate Indiana state or local license. For Tier 2 and Tier 3 services (handyman, cleaning, lawn care, etc.), licensing may not be required depending on the trade and locality, but insurance is still expected.
Do I need insurance?
General liability insurance is required for all contractors on the platform. We recommend a minimum of $1M per occurrence. If you don't have GL insurance yet, we recommend Insureon as a fast and affordable option for home service contractors.
What areas does HWHS cover?
We're launching in the Indianapolis metro area — Marion, Hamilton, Johnson, Hancock, Shelby, and Hendricks counties. All Indiana markets are visible on the platform, and we're activating new areas as contractor networks are built. If your area isn't live yet, apply anyway — we'll onboard you when your market activates.
How is HWHS different from Angi or Thumbtack?
On lead platforms, you pay $30-80 per lead whether or not it converts, and you're competing against other contractors on every job. On HWHS, there are no lead fees. Jobs come to you prepaid. We match the right contractor to the right job — you're not bidding against five other people. We set the price, the homeowner prepays, and you just do the work.
